Baptism

Experience new life through baptism

Baptism is a powerful step of obedience and a public declaration of your faith in Jesus Christ.

It symbolises leaving behind the old life and embracing new life in Him.

Whether you’re exploring baptism for the first time or ready to take this step, we’re here to walk with you on this meaningful journey.

  • How are We Baptised?

At Taringa Baptist Church, baptism is performed by full immersion in water, following the example set by Jesus Christ. The word “baptise” comes from the Greek word baptizo, which means “to immerse or dip under water.”

This method reflects how Jesus Himself was baptised and aligns with every example of baptism found in the Bible. Immersion powerfully symbolizes the believer’s identification with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.

As seen in Acts 8:38–39, even early believers like the Ethiopian eunuch were baptised by being fully submerged in water.

  • When Should We be Baptised?

According to Scripture and the practice at Taringa Baptist, believers should be baptised as soon as they have made a personal decision to follow Jesus Christ.

In the New Testament, individuals who accepted the message of Christ were often baptised on the same day (Acts 2:41).

There is no need for delay—baptism is seen as the next step after placing one’s faith in Christ. Once someone believes, they are encouraged to publicly affirm their faith through baptism without hesitation.

  • Who Should be Baptised?

Baptism is intended for every person who has consciously chosen to believe in Jesus Christ and accept Him as Lord and Saviour.

It is an act reserved for those who understand its meaning and have personally made a commitment to follow Christ.

Taringa Baptist does not baptise young children who are not yet able to grasp the significance of faith.

As illustrated in Acts 8:12, both men and women who believed the message of Christ were baptised, showing that belief is the only prerequisite.

  • Why Should We be Baptised?

There are several important reasons why a believer should be baptised.

First, Jesus Himself was baptised as an act of obedience, setting an example for His followers (Mark 1:9). Second, baptism is a command from Christ, demonstrating love and obedience to Him (John 14:15). Third, it serves as a public declaration of faith, symbolizing the believer’s commitment to live a new life in Christ (Romans 6:4).

Finally, baptism visually represents spiritual truths—our death to sin, burial of the old life, and resurrection to new life in Jesus. Though baptism does not save, it is a meaningful step in the life of a Christian.
